As readers of our Massachusetts family law blog may be aware, the divorce between reality star Kim Kardashian and NBA player Kris Humphries has been finalized. The matter had previously been set to go to trial later this year, but the pair have been able to reach an agreement to avoid further litigation. The ongoing legal battle between the couple has been making headlines since they split following 72 days of marriage. Kardashian filed for divorce in October of 2011, and more than a year and a half of litigation has ensued. It is reported that Humphries, who plays for the Brooklyn Nets, will not receive any money from Kardashian in the divorce settlement.
Although celebrities face public scrutiny into their private affairs, many times the issues they face are not dissimilar to those of Westborough residents. This is especially true when it comes to issues involving divorce and child custody disputes. The complexities of these issues and navigation of the court system makes it imperative to enlist the help of an experienced Central Massachusetts family law attorney.
In many cases, drawn out litigation such as that in the Kardashian-Humphries’ divorce can be at least partially avoided by utilizing sophisticated marital agreements. Prenuptial and postnuptial agreements can be extremely useful in high asset marriages or a variety of other circumstances. Marital agreements can provide for division of separate and marital property in the course of a divorce, and can include provisions addressing alimony and child support.
Even the most sophisticated marital agreements cannot always address all the issues that may arise in a divorce. However, litigation is not always necessary to resolve disputes. The job of a divorce lawyer often involves representation during mediation and negotiating settlements for the benefit of clients.
